Energy Efficient LED Light
Thinking of going green, but don’t know where to start? Why not change out one light fixture at a time in your home or business from those heat producing, inefficient incandescent bulbs to an energy saving LED option! Did you know the popular compact fluorescent CFL’s (or ice cream bulb) contain toxic mercury that when broken can contaminate our home and areas we reside? Ultimately the problematic neurotoxin mercury makes its way to our landfills, water supply, fish and then back to us when we consume those fish.
Don’t eat fish? There’s still cause for alarm in using CFL’s – just listen to what the EPA instructs in their website article, “Cleaning Up a Broken CFL, Steps to Take When a CFL Breaks”.
Recommendation from the EPA for CFL cleanup:
- “Have people and pets leave the room.
- Air out the room for 5-10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor environment.
- Shut off the central forced air heating/air-conditioning system, if you have one.
- Collect materials needed to clean up broken bulb: stiff paper or cardboard; sticky tape; damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes (for hard surfaces); and a glass jar with a metal lid or a sealable plastic bag” Source Web 3/3/14.
Still not sold on switching for health reasons? Then check out the comparison chart outlining energy efficiencies and costs related between LED’s, Incandescent Bulbs and CFL’s to see how you can save http://www.designrecycleinc.com/led%20comp%20chart.html

Out with the old…in with the savings!
S-Tek Greenline would like to recognize Rainmaker Ponds & Irrigation as an Upstate business that’s a bit greener (energy efficient) today thanks to LED lighting alternatives. S-Tek recently did an entire office LED retrofit (relamping) project for Rainmaker changing out their old inefficient lights to energy efficient LED lighting.
- Project Energy Savings: The old bulbs totaled 1100 Watts, our solution reduced total usage to 235 Watts.
- Results: Rainmaker now has a total savings of 845 Watts per hour with LED lighting!
Above Photo Collage: Relamping project for Rainmaker Ponds & Irrigation from S-Tek Greenline. Note total Watts and hours of use between the two lights – traditional flood light = 65W and 2,000 hours compared to the 9.4W and 50,000 hours of the LED replacement.

More about the benefits of sustainability and LED lighting…
The first and most obvious benefit of switching to LED lighting is that they simply use less energy. There are plenty of other reasons, including waste reduction, recyclability, the use of materials & resources and the effect on building and design practices.
LED lighting supports sustainable design in several ways. LED’s uses less energy than most other types of lamps (see comparisons in images above), they lasts longer which means less replacement and reduced waste, LED’s are mercury-free, and can be housed in special luminaires designed for easier disassembly and recycling.
