A New Home for Power — Generator House Update

If you’ve been following our local Upstate mountain microhydro power project, you’ll definitely recognize the progress that’s taken place on the property. Our crew has been hard at work and we’re pleased to share some photos from Phase 2, The Generator House (click on the images below to view slideshow). The custom built generator house is the new home for power production on the hydro project and is the key to converting the power of water into electrical energy for our client.

To recap, microhydro power systems produce power from streams, small rivers and other water supplies. The power can be used to generate electricity, drive machinery and bring electricity to remote locations. Our site is set up for a residential application that is set in a grid tie/off grid scenario to power his home and send excess power to the grid.

Brief Hydro History:

For centuries, people have been tapping into the energy  of flowing water first for mechanical power, and in the past hundred years, for electricity. Early applications included milling, pumping, and driving machinery. Unlike wind and sun, the right hydro resource can be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This allowed pioneers to run irrigation pumps and grain mills, and allows people today to make clean, renewable electricity at a reasonable cost.

At S-Tek Greenline, we are committed to high sustainability standards and are ever cautious of the natural resources we consume on a daily basis. We believe in providing long-term solutions that help reduce power consumption whether through LED lighting, solar, wind and/or hydro power systems. By reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and focusing on renewable energy, we all benefit from a cleaner environment for years to come.

We’re excited to report The Journal covered the progress of the microhydro project! Here’s an excerpt from the article printed 7/25/14,

“Making waves — Seneca-based builders on cutting edge of green energy, By Steven Bradley, The Journal

SENECA — Jason Smith reads Home Power magazine the way a sportsman might read Field & Stream or a golfer Golf Digest. “Four, five, six times, I’ll read through the same magazine,” he admitted. Home power is a passion for Smith. But it’s also his business, and Smith’s company is on the verge of completing what he believes will be the only grid-tie/off-grid microhydro residential power system in the Upstate. While that term may sound like a mouthful, Smith insists the basic idea is not so complicated.

“It’s not rocket science,” he said. “You’re making power with water.” Smith is the Chief Operating Officer of S-Tek Building Solutions in Seneca, and its Greenline Energy Solutions division focuses on producing renewable, or “green,” energy solutions for commercial and residential clients. Just like solar and wind power, microhyrdro power harnesses nature to produce energy.”

Microhydro Power Project by S-Tek

You’ve heard the saying, location, location, location – and for a microhydro power system location is the key to success! Microhydro is the best form of local power production, but is extremely site specific. The location has to have  sufficient flow and drop to make the generator worthwhile. A microhydro power system has a tremendous advantage over solar electricity and wind turbines, since it runs 24 hours per day (solar and wind are intermittent sources).

Our renewable energy division, S-Tek Greenline considers every aspect of site, location and water flow to determine if a microhydro installation project would be beneficial. Our current hydro project has all the key elements to provide sufficient power for our client and we’re happy to share a few photos  here. We’ll post updates as the project moves forward and are excited to gear up toward installing the generator house.

As you can see from the photos, it truly was all hands on deck (young and old) to run the wire down the very long hill to the generator house location.  Without question, we at S-Tek have the best crew of professionals around! If you are interested in renewable energy solutions for your home or business, give us a call today at 864-888-1620 or visit our showroom at 820 A By Pass 123 in Seneca, SC to set up an appointment with an energy specialist.
